I really like everyone's expressions in the photo for some reason. Anyways, great chapter, can't wait to see how it goes from here.

Ah, now I get what he was referring to.

Yes, his strategy is a smart one. However, it means a careful game of cat and mouse with a person whose ultimate goals he doesn't know. Very dangerous.

@Mindsword2: He's playing for the late game, no four-move win for Billy.

@Don Quixotes: Aye, but this is not chess, no matter how he thinks of it. In chess, the ultimate goal is the same. Sure there are subgoals, but everything is balanced around getting the enemy king is checkmate. His new win condition is getting out of here. But what is Amical's? Playing the late game is dangerous when it turns out the opponent is playing a different game with different rules.

And at the end of the day, Amical is Acanthus and you know you should always avoid playing games with the Fae.

@Mindsword2: I actually don't know anything about MtA, so I don't really know what the Fae in this case are.

@Don Quixotes: Um it's often written as MTAw to differentiate it frm MAge: thhe Ascension. Basically Basically the True Fae are the denizens of Arcadia, the world on the other side of the Hedge. They're apparently quite odd for most humans to understand:

@burningtyger & @Don Quixotes The article linked is a good description of their general nature. A common part of the lore of Fae/Gentry is that they like to mess with humans for fun, for slave labor or just because. They make Contracts and Pacts, loving wordplay, trickery, and loopholes. Much like folklore characters, they love to one up each other and play games with unfair odds, especially with humans (or any non-fae), who are much easier to trick.

Because Amical is an Acanthus mage, the watchtower in Arcadia (home of the Fae), many mages would put Fae stereotypes on him. All mage types get certain traits associated with them, causing unfamiliar mages to sometimes generalize each other by type even if their assumptions are wrong.

Heck, I have some of that myself. So, if you look at it that way, has Billy, Obrimos or not.

Tease. Taunt. Seduce. Keep the target guessing and wanting more. Suss out the rules if you can, and if they change, change with them. What better game? Billy's sure to have lots of fun.

The song below is one of my favorite pick-me ups, and somehow fits the situation; heck, in a way it's what Amical's telling the seedlings. Enjoy!

Billy looks way too much like Light Yagami in that pic.

@Telzavo: He'll play chess... And then eat a potato chip!

I have to say Billy is a jackass, but I find that he and I think along very similar lines. What does that say about me, I wonder?

ChibiSilverWings, February 11th, 2015, 10:29 pm     Reply

@Voidwolf: Well hey, there are benefits to thinking pragmatically. Billy has faults of course, and sure, if you approach all situations with a cold pragmatism that focuses on yourself, you're going to end up being a real asshole sometimes, but it's certainly not ALWAYS a bad thing. There are lots of benefits to being a bit more on that side in some situations. I certainly will say that I end up thinking that way sometimes myself!

@ChibiSilverWings: I suppose I could have put a smiley face or other text way of showing my question was purely humorous and that I don't actually fear that I am in danger of behaving like Billy. But I certainly like the way Billy thinks in such a cause-and-effect way, judging what the reactions will be, and his own reactions to those reactions, etc. Very much like the chess grandmaster he is. I am very, very far from a chess matter, but I grew up playing enough chess that that way of thinking is certainly ingrained in me.

@Voidwolf: Heh I was a bit on the fence if you were serious or not, text is one of those tricky beasts in terms of tone conveyance. I'm glad you weren't worried hah
