"...Nor yet favor to men of skill..." * Yes, Curio, if you are master of time and chance, you may well control what happeneth to them all. Right now, however, Amical is changing what happened to himself, using Rewrite History (probably the Thief of Years rote) to substitute chess practice for his time at the shooting range. *(Ecclesiastes 9:11)

@burningtyger: I agree. Firearms for... academics? Counterspell may be the best option to reduce skill. But Amical is better at it. Can Billy afford to split dice rolls?

Hurry, Billy! Counterspell!

Wait, so Time can move your skill in one area to skill in another? This reminds me of Red Mage from 8bit Theater and how he'd mess with his stat sheet.

@shylarah: Yup, it's exactly like that.

Derail Plot (Time OOO)
And this is why Time is one of the hardest arcanas to challenge head on.

@The_Hyena_King: Acanthus is basically OP. I'm glad they're trying to even the mage types out more in 2.0 Awakening. Thusfar it looks like they're trying to beef up a few of the weaker ones.

@ChibiSilverWings: Acanthus isn't OP. Any path filled to mastery, plus a heathy handful of Gnosis, is going to result in some good times. You just have to be creative enough to work with what you got.

@Alexis_Royce: Well yeah for sure, Mages in general are OP XD but I think Acanthus is one of the best ones. I'm quite happy to see how they'll balance things!

Them chess-gun tactics could be end end of Billy-dear

@Aslandus: Now I'm imagining a version of chess where you must shoot pieces off the board with a pistol from 50ft to be able to capture them.

Unfortunately, the result of this match is too predictable.

If the author doesn't have the guts to kill one character, what about a Total Party Kill?

The only thing that can save it from boring me is *how* Billy will win.

@Kamikaze: I'll bet you $10 they have the guts to kill characters.

But I'm guessing you're right that Billy isn't in danger of dying here. The character who is most in danger of dying soon is Adrestia. For one, she has already proven she is willing to die to save others (specifically Curio, so Curio is in very small danger of dying until Adrestia is out of the way). Two, her backstory hasn't really been hinted at, and if you go as far as to hint at a backstory, you can't kill off the character until you finish telling that story (that is also why I think Curio, Tyler, and Asia are safe for the moment). Although from a logistical standpoint, killing Adrestia does present the problem of leaving the party without a healer.

@Voidwolf: To be clear, we're going to kill characters, but this comic is pretty long, and killing them when we've BARELY started is silly. So much more horrible things have to happen to them first!

Billy, I really doubt that you can win this.
First of all, it doesn't matter how long you give Amical. He's a time mage, he can slow down his time or speed up yours all he wants.
Second, fate magic. He might do that to block you from seeing good moves, or something. I don't know how fate magic works, but judging from the phone calls, it might prevent Billy from taking moves or playing out strategies that would benefit them the most.
Also, whoever said Amical was an amateur? He may be only 20 years old. But I have a theory he's using time magic to lengthen his lifespan a lot, so he's probably a lot older. He could have been playing chess for a much longer time than Billy.
Billy may be an excellent chess player, but he's at a major disadvantage here. Bending the laws of physics is great, but not very useful in a chess match. And it doesn't exactly say in the rules of chess that you can't use magic, does it? He should've at least specified that when saying the rules...
Bye bye, seedlings.
